- One Year in the Making: The Quest for the Perfect Kitchen
Ellen Neufeld’s home in Centennial, a quintessential suburb in the southern Denver metro area, needed a tune-up. The plan was to expand the kitchen and living room and add a mud room, all done as quickly as possible so the Neufeld household could return to living the suburban dream. But plans don’t always come together as intended, and despite the best efforts of those involved, the remodel took over a year to complete. Ellen doesn’t blame the contractor, Davidson Builders, who were chosen after extensive online research. Rather, she chalks the protracted duration of the project up to things simply not running smoothly. It’s an unfortunate reality for these types of projects, one that many homeowners will find themselves suffering through. Despite this, the end result is something Ellen describes as “fabulous,” and she’s not wrong about that. Ellen loves to cook, and the kitchen is the beating heart of the Neufeld home. It’s a place where family and friends come together, united by her culinary zeal. She wanted more space to entertain and cook, in order to make that magic happen, Ellen went with an impressive line of Dacor appliances. Most importantly, for a house where the culinary is king, the tools for creating sumptuous meals must be in place. To that end, the new kitchen now includes a six-burner gas range. Ultra-wide continuous grates allow pots to be easily moved across the eye-catching brass burners capable of incredibly precise heat outputs ranging from just 750 BTUs up to 22,000. The Dacor double wall oven is equally remarkable, offering powerful convection and steam roasting capabilities. The double oven allows for two dishes to be prepared separately at the same time, and the inclusion of the steam assist ensures that baked goods turn out moist and delicious. The oven’s seven-inch screen features intuitive controls, and can even offer expert chef advice such as rack settings, ideal temperature and cook time. In order to hold all of the bountiful meals and keep their ingredients fresh, the kitchen remodel included a Dacor 36-inch column refrigerator and accompanying 30-inch freezer. The freezer and refrigerator are vividly lit with expansive LED lights in the interior and have been designed to discreetly blend in with the surrounding cabinetry. Hidden touch panels offer digital temperature displays, and a Wi-Fi-enabled camera in the refrigerator allows users to remotely check on its contents while, say, shopping at the grocery store. The freezer’s dual icemakers create standard and cocktail ice — larger chunks meant to last longer in mixed drinks. Rounding out the set of Dacor appliances, the in-drawer microwave is installed flush with the surrounding cabinets. The push-to-open drawer means there’s no need for a handle jutting out and disrupting the seamless feel of the sleek installation. Beyond looking sharp, the microwave comes equipped with a bevy of features, including a smart moisture sensor that can automatically adjust cook time and power levels based on internal humidity. It’s a space that means business, capable of meeting whatever culinary demands Ellen might have of it, and to clean it all up she also decided to include not just one, but two dishwashers installed in the new kitchen island. Ellen says she loves the new space and its boundless possibilities. “We cook at home all the time,” she says. “Now we have much more room.” While the process may not have gone as smoothly as she would have liked, it’s hard to argue with the results, and Ellen looks forward to many years of cooking meals in the space she loves. #perfect #kitchen
- Transforming Your Kitchen with Reclaimed Furniture: A Sustainable Storage Solution
In an era where sustainability is more than a trend, integrating reclaimed furniture into your kitchen can perfectly blend style and environmental consciousness. Reclaimed furniture adds a unique charm to your home and offers an eco-friendly alternative to modern storage solutions. Here’s a look at how you can repurpose furniture to create functional and stylish kitchen storage. The Benefits of Reclaimed Furniture Environmental Impact Reclaimed furniture reduces the need for new materials, thus saving trees and decreasing the carbon footprint of manufacturing new furniture. You contribute to a circular economy by reusing and repurposing, minimizing waste and promoting sustainability. Unique Aesthetics Each piece of reclaimed furniture carries its own history and character, making your kitchen truly one-of-a-kind. The natural wear and patina on wood or metal add a rustic charm that is difficult to replicate with new items. Cost-Effective Often, reclaimed furniture can be found at a fraction of the cost of new pieces. Consignment shops, thrift stores, and garage or estate sales are treasure troves for finding unique items that can be transformed with a little creativity and effort. Ideas for Reclaimed Furniture in the Kitchen Cabinets and Hutches Antique hutches and cabinets can be refinished and used as standalone pantries or additional storage for dishes and cookware. Their solid wood construction often means they are more durable than many modern, mass-produced alternatives. Dressers, Tables and Desks A vintage dresser can serve as a perfect kitchen island or storage unit, combining practicality and style with its deep drawers ideal for storing utensils, linens, and small appliances. By sanding and repainting, you can transform it to seamlessly match your kitchen décor. Similarly, repurposing a table or desk as a kitchen island offers additional workspace and storage. Drawers can hold cutlery and cooking tools, while surfaces can be used for meal prep or as a casual dining spot. Repurposed Shelving Units Bookshelves or industrial shelving units can easily be repurposed for kitchen use. Open shelving offers easy access to frequently used items like spices, jars and cookbooks, while allowing you to display your favorite kitchenware. Wine Racks and Crates Vintage wine racks can store more than just wine. Use them for holding other bottled beverages, olive oil, syrups, infusions, or even rolled kitchen towels. Simple wooden crates can be stacked and mounted on walls for rustic open shelving. Tips for Incorporating Reclaimed Furniture Assess the Condition Ensure the furniture is structurally sound. Check for any damage or wear that could affect its functionality. Minor repairs can be done at home, but extensive damage might require professional help. Clean and Refinish Thoroughly clean the furniture to remove dirt and grime. Sanding and repainting or staining can breathe new life into these pieces. Use non-toxic paints and finishes to keep your kitchen environment safe. Customize for Functionality Don’t hesitate to modify the furniture to suit your needs better. Adding hooks, shelves or dividers can enhance functionality. Customizing hardware such as handles and knobs can also update the look and improve usability. Blend with Modern Elements Mix reclaimed pieces with modern kitchen elements for an eclectic and balanced look. An heirloom dresser paired with sleek, contemporary appliances creates a harmonious contrast that is visually appealing and functional. Using reclaimed furniture as kitchen storage is a creative and sustainable way to enhance your home. Not only do you give a second life to vintage treasures, but you also contribute to a more sustainable future. With a bit of imagination and effort, you can transform your kitchen into a stylish and environmentally friendly space.
- The Party House
J ust outside the Cherry Creek neighborhood of Denver, Kelly and Andrew Duke live in a beautiful home labeled “The Party House” by friends and family. The Dukes moved into their new home in 2012 with plans to expand their family while also continuing to host for their friends and loved ones. Fast-forward 10 years, and the Duke residence has grown. They’ve had two children, and several members of Kelly’s family have moved to Colorado and frequently pop in for visits. With the added traffic flow, Kelly and Andrew decided a major remodel would create more space for their busy lifestyle. “We enjoy the revolving door nature of our home with a constant stream of friends, family, and kids stopping by, and our kitchen needed to meet our hosting needs,” Kelly explains. Kelly and Andrew always host holiday events, the most prominent being “Friendsgiving”. “The key must-have for us was a big island. To do that, we had to tear down a ton of walls to open up our main floor into one social space. The kitchen is always where people congregate for holidays, so we built the largest island to accommodate everyone’s needs,” said Kelly. FHG Builders in Denver partnered with the Dukes to make all their construction aspirations come to life. The other fan favorite of the kitchen is the wet-bar area with two under-counter refrigerators—one for the kids and one for the adults. Kelly and Andrew Duke are avid wine drinkers and even host a wine club in their home. Custom shelving in the bar area (Provided by Brian at Kitchen Showcase in Denver) is perfect for Kelly to store her cabernets and for Andrew to proudly display his bourbons. The added custom under-cabinet lighting throughout the kitchen and bar area also helps to highlight their beautiful wine and spirits collection. The Dukes partnered with Urban Lights in Denver, who created one of Kelly’s favorite kitchen elements by running floor lights under all the cabinets. Kelly wanted bright and vibrant, and the lighting came together to bring her vision to life. “All of the contractors were great to work with, and my vision never changed when we started this project. I had a lot of help from my best friend Sara, Stepmother Vicki, and our other family friends Rita and Sandy when it came to many of my design choices,” Kelly says. Kelly is originally from West Virginia and loves to cook in the Southern style. She felt Dacor appliances were the perfect match to complement her cooking, and the refrigeration options help her stay more organized than any other brand. The Dukes purchased their Dacor appliance package through Appliance Factory Fine Lines in Parker. They partnered with account manager Tarek Foda on specifications and design work. The kitchen starts with a professional dual-fuel rang . Dacor provides top-tier cooking features with their “Chef Mode”, allowing users to have expert advice from professional chefs from the comfort of their homes. The dual-fuel range also comes fully equipped with WiFi capabilities, steam features, and speed convection. These cutting-edge technologies allow people who live on the go to make restaurant-quality dishes quickly. Being frequent hosts prompted the Dukes to add an additional wall oven to their island. Dacor’s single, convection wall-oven helps reduce the time needed to prepare a big, southern-style Thanksgiving feast. The Duke’s favorite appliance is the 42-inch, four-paneled French Door refrigerator. This refrigerator features a masterful triple cooling system and combines performance, craftsmanship, and beauty like no other brand. The four panels help keep the Dukes organized and work well with their on-the-go lifestyle. Depending on the family’s needs, one of the bottom panels can convert from a refrigerator to a freezer. Working and parenting will keep any couple’s hands full. Combined with an open-door policy and frequently hosting gatherings and events, it makes sense that these busy homeowners appreciate the little features that help them save time and stay organized. The Dukes have enjoyed coming home from a long day of skiing with their two children to spread out and relax, even if it is short-lived before their next hosted event. “The island is my favorite part of this entire kitchen. It is compatible for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even the bottomless brunches,” Kelly explains. The Dukes are also looking forward to having local celebrity Chef Mark Kalix throw a dinner party with all their friends and are excited to have a home where they are ready to entertain at a moment’s notice.
- It'll Be Fun!
S ean and Sumer Howard spent years living in a motorhome full-time. They traveled the country, hiking and collecting wine. Through their travels they discovered that the four-corners region held a special spot in their hearts, eventually leading them to settle in Aurora. The couple’s home was a new build, but they decided to remodel the kitchen because Sumer wanted a more custom look. “I had a vision for what I wanted and did what I needed to do to make it happen,” Sumer describes. Living in a motorhome for years gave Sumer a lot of time to dream big and put together her wish list for a full-sized kitchen. She was especially excited about having more space for cooking, and her must-haves reflected this. The list included ample cabinet storage, a large island for prep, and top-of-the-line appliances. Sumer did all of the design work herself, and drew much of her inspiration from Pinterest and the designers she follows on Instagram. She ended up with an updated traditional style that pairs traditional elements, like crown moldings, with the clean lines of more contemporary styles. Her countertops are Taj Mahal leathered-quartzite from Architectural Surfaces in Denver and include a drip ledge under the farmhouse-style sink. She purchased her Kitchen Craft cabinets from the Kitchen Showcase in Centennial and chose a weathered-slate color palette that includes hints of maple, seashell, and rift oak. Sean contributed to the project by doing most of the renovation work himself, from the plumbing to the Moroccan sea-salt-colored backsplash. The backsplash involved placing 1,989 individual zellige style tiles, provided by Cle Tile, by hand. “Whenever we were considering adding more DIY, Sumer would say ‘It’ll be fun’,” Sean laughs while recalling. “I may have had some different opinions at the time, but looking back it really was fun for us to work together and create something special.” The couple even has one of the leftover tiles on display in the living room, adorned with the words “It’ll be fun” and the date that the project was finished to commemorate the achievement. Sumer and Sean chose Signature Kitchen Suite for the appliance package from Appliance Factory Fine Lines in Parker. Many brands were in the conversation when selecting her appliances, but Sumer felt she would have to make sacrifices with most, except for Signature Kitchen Suite. Sumer and Sean choose a 48-inch refrigerator and freezer column configuration. Both units come panel-ready to match the rest of the cabinetry to the matching unlacquered-brass handles. One of Sumer’s favorite features on this refrigerator was the lift-and-go drawers, which allow more space when hosting guests. With the largest capacity in the industry and precise food preservation, this was an easy choice for their refrigeration needs. The main attraction to the cooking aspect of Sumer and Sean’s kitchen is the 48-inch dual-fuel range. Signature Kitchen Suite takes its slogan “true to food” to heart, and this piece allows near limitless options. Known in the industry as the “Swiss Army knife of cooking,” this range comes fully equipped with four open gas burners, a 12-inch induction cooktop, a built-in Sous Vide cooker, and a full-sized convection oven with steam assist. Sumer and Sean also included a panel-ready SKS dishwasher. Attaching the custom panel was a challenge, but Sumer was set on it and the final result proves that it was worth the extra effort. Being avid wine drinkers and collectors, Sean and Sumer topped off this project with a pair of beautiful panel-ready wine columns in the bar area. Both wine columns have a glass panel inside the custom cabinetry, allowing you to see the collector’s entire wine display. The two wine columns are at each end of the bar setup, sandwiching the rest of the matching cabinetry, giving them a dream setup for any wine connoisseur. “My final outcome was exactly what I envisioned. I had to live through the transformation, but every step was fun. I have a passion for design, and watching my vision come to life has been really exciting and satisfying. My biggest piece of advice is to stand your ground and don’t let people talk you out of things. If you have a vision, find someone who will figure out how to make it happen. Don’t be afraid to point things out that you don’t love. Hire people based on good work and trust, not based on money.” Sumer says. Sumer is primarily excited about mastering her range’s features and cooking methods. Celebrity Chef Mark Kalix was included with her appliance package from Appliance Factory Fine Lines and will host a dinner party for Sumer, Sean, and their friends. He will also teach them how to maximize every one of the features of all of their new appliances. Sumer and Sean also have a special bottle of wine reserved to celebrate the completion of their dream kitchen. They can’t wait to enjoy it while reflecting on all their hard work.
- Sweet Tea Served Here: When Southern Charm Meets Homeowner Remodel
You’ve heard of pops of color in the kitchen, but how about pops of wood? That was the request Kelsey and Zach Wilbern gave their designer for this homeowner-driven remodel in Arvada. “They knew what they wanted. They were easy to work with, and it was a very enjoyable process,” says Jared Caruso of Caruso Kitchen Designs. The Wilbern’s list of must-haves was met in every corner of their dream kitchen, from the massive island and hidden appliance garage to the adorable dining room hutch that adds storage and warmth with an additional pop of white oak. The Wilberns wanted a bright, modern farmhouse, so the dark granite and knotty alder cabinets that previously occupied the space had to go. “I love how the white cabinets brighten our house. The clean and simple lines will never go out of style. And the touch of white oak and shiplap add character and texture.” says Kelsey. It is common to see tile used as a backsplash. In this kitchen, the backsplash is made from the same thick-veined white quartz slab as the countertops. The full-height countertop backsplash in a Laza pattern from 5280 Stone accentuates a beautiful 36-inch Thermador Pro Harmony® gas range. This stunning range also “stars” six of Thermador’s exclusive Star® Burners. The patented five-point design provides equal flame distribution for even cooking. The range is Truly Flush Mounted™, meaning it’s designed to fit perfectly flush in cabinets with a standard 24-inc h depth. This stunning range also “stars” six of Thermador’s exclusive Star® Burners. The patented five-point design provides equal flame distribution for even cooking. Right across from the range sits the 9’x9’ island with dual Thermador dishwashers. Dual dishwashers are a great amenity when you have multiple kids. Zach explains, “We have three kids, and for some reason, they enjoy drinking out of five cups every day.” — an experience any parent can relate to! Another benefit of two dishwashers is countertops free of dishes and an empty sink, especially when you are busy, or frequently entertain guests. “Life is hectic, and with three active kiddos always on the go, it’s so nice to be able to continue to load one dishwasher instead of dishes piling up in the sink while the other dishwasher is full and running,” says Kelsey. How many times are we making that late dinner, and we want to clean as we go, but the dishwasher is full, and we don’t have it in us to put those dishes away? If you love to host, you can load up both of them and have less mess to clean up the next day. Thinking about installing a second dishwasher yet? The Wilberns didn’t stop there. Walking into Fine Lines, Zach had a different set of appliances in mind that included a 30-inch fridge and freezer. When Zach opened the 36-inch refrigerator from Thermador, he could not resist! He went back and forth, opening the 30-inch and the 36-inch. He started snapping pictures to send to Kelsey and calling her, telling her she just had to see them. The refrigerator features a breathtaking Built-in Preservation Solution and ThermaFresh System, the ultimate solution for extending the freshness of meat and produce for longer periods. The delicate produce bins and shelving can be personalized for convenience and Open Door Assist offers one-touch opening. The Home Connect app allows temperature and humidity adjustments to be made from anywhere, even the grocery store so that conditions are perfect by the time you get home. A 36-inch freezer column makes an attractive, symmetrical complement to the fridge. The freezer features an automatic ice maker and Thermador’s signature Diamond Ice, ice cubes that are designed to melt slowly, making them perfect for cocktails. Proprietary Cool Air Flow technology for consistent cold air distribution. The couple met with Jared from Caruso Kitchens and handed him a list of appliances to incorporate. They wanted to keep their new appliances’ exact placement in their kitchen. Kelsey says, “The experience was incredible! He (Jared) listened to my ideas and made them happen.” It takes a village, and with help from Doreen Waters, a designer at Caruso Kitchens, and Brad Laird, a contractor at Clear Cut Installation, they made the Wilbern’s project a dream come true and the most viewed project on their website! Kelsey was in complete awe that her vision turned out perfectly. From multiple Pinterest ideas to the home in Candelas in Arvada, this kitchen will be full of love and heavily utilized. When asked what she was most looking forward to in the new kitchen, Kelsey said, “Host. Host. Host!! We love entertaining!! And, of course, all the cooking and baking memories with our kiddos.” So much joy awaits this wonderful family! #homeowner #remodel
- Brightening Up Your Day: The Open and Bright Kitchen of Your Dreams
By Andrew Ferguson A short drive north of Denver rests the quaint, family town of Erie. The homeowners, who asked not to be named, settled in this suburban neighborhood to raise their four children. Their home was built in the mid 90’s, but as their family grew they realized it was time to open and brighten up their kitchen. Their goal was a comfortable space to raise their children with resale value for the future. Their number one piece of advice is, “Work with a contractor who has design abilities and/or work with a designer. Be mindful of your constraints and factor them in very early.” The couple decided to partner with Joey Paull Yoder, the principal designer for Paull Interiors in Denver. Joey has been in the design industry for over 15 years, and her travels around the world (26 countries and counting) have given her unique ideas to share with her clients. Joey helped them create a modern farmhouse design that was perfect for day-to-day life. “The space needed brightening and to feel more like the fun, youthful couple who are raising their family in the space. More counter space, tons of storage, and organization solutions were key.” The husband and wife duo started by adding more lighting, creating a recessed door at the coffee area to corral morning messes, and hide away appliances that were not in use. They also added two large pull-out pantries that flank the refrigerator, doubling the pantry space and making organization a snap. Delta Design was the contractor that brought the couple’s design goals to life, and Tharp Custom Cabinetry provided the upscale, autumn smoke-colored cabinets. When it came time to choose their appliance package from Appliance Factory Fine Lines in Boulder, the owners went with JennAir due to the balance of performance and sleek design aesthetics. Having a large household, the couple went with a 42-inch wide, French-door refrigerator with a bottom freezer. The family keeps plenty of snacks on hand, so ample storage was key. The beautiful obsidian interior separates JennAir from other brands. This model also runs on a TwinFresh climate control system to preserve fresh and frozen foods longer. The centerpiece of this kitchen is a 36-inch gas range with six burners. This range comes equipped with the JennAir Culinary Center so the family can easily try new recipes while ensuring perfect results. The halo-effect knobs are a subtle touch and beautifully match the lighting scheme. The couple completed the kitchen with a 24-inch, 240-volt, speed oven that can cook a full dinner in minutes, while still having restaurant-quality dishes. Above the range sits one of the family’s favorite parts of their new space, a custom 36-inch hood that one of the owners built himself. “It stands out and completes our kitchen,” he said. With four children, noise level was a major consideration, so the owners chose one of the quietest dishwashers on the market. This JennAir dishwasher runs at 39 decibels, which is considered whisper-quiet. With the TriFecta wash system, you don’t have to choose between quiet and performance. We look forward to enjoying the openness and brightness while experiencing the natural flow of the kitchen with the family.” These happy homeowners are currently looking forward to hosting their first event with friends and family to show off their new bright and open space.
- A Cherry On Top
By Sammy Gallo I n the world of home remodeling, some projects stand out as true gems. AJ and Kate’s journey with Red Chair Designs is one such story — a tale of a complete kitchen makeover that turned a house into a dream home. From the very beginning to the end, their collaboration with Red Chair Designs felt like the ultimate relationship in home renovation. Initially, AJ and Kate anticipated a more hands-on approach to their home makeover, which they would describe as modern and contemporary. But their busy lives quickly made it clear that they needed expert guidance. Enter Red Chair Designs, a team that would play a pivotal role in shaping their dream kitchen. Kate said, “They were able to present options and information at each step of the way to make decisions easy.” The transformation they envisioned was nothing short of spectacular—a complete overhaul from cabinetry to appliances, lighting to plumbing. To achieve a truly personalized touch, Kate and AJ embarked on a unique journey, engaging in a series of “design psychology exercises” to delve deep into how they wanted their kitchen to feel. These exercises were instrumental in guiding Red Chair Designs to select finishes and layouts that perfectly encapsulated their vision. One of the key changes made was opening up the kitchen to create a more inviting space for entertaining. The choice of Arizona tile in Alamo White for the countertops and islands infused the room with a sense of cool elegance, providing an uplifting and compassionate ambiance. Complementing this, the unfinished oak hardwood floor perfectly harmonized with the striking polo blue cabinetry that adorned the kitchen. Kate expressed “Every day when I see the kitchen from the top of the stairs, I can’t believe it’s mine.” The meticulously arranged wide plank wood flooring, skillfully executed by Red Chair Designs, stands as a testament to the truly bespoke nature of this kitchen enhancement. For AJ, who has a passion for cooking, selecting top-of-the-line appliances was a no-brainer. Thermador took center stage with their 48-inch range, featuring the remarkable Six Star™ Burners. These burners ensured uniform cooking, promising consistently delicious results. The 12-inch Close Non-Stick Griddle added another layer of convenience, making cooking and cleanup a breeze. Three telescopic racks in the professional range glided smoothly on ball bearings, ensuring easy access for even the heaviest of dishes. Maximizing space efficiency was a paramount consideration for Kate and AJ. Their decision to incorporate a bar sink and double trash cans into the kitchen design not only reduced the distance between frequently used stations but also created a more conducive environment for collaborative culinary endeavors. And what’s a kitchen without a top-notch refrigerator and freezer? Kate and AJ opted for the 48-inch, built-in column fridge and freezer from Thermador. The Thermafresh® System, with its advanced cooling technology, ensured precise humidity control and temperature management, keeping their food fresh and flavors intact. “The side by-side fridge and freezer perfectly fit our space, as we had prioritized the wider range. We love the small oven for cooking only one item or for cooking multiple things at different temperatures,” says Kate. To keep up with the demands of daily life, they chose the Emerald Stainless Steel dishwasher from Thermador. Its quiet operation, with a decibel level of only 48, ensured peace and tranquility in the kitchen. And for that touch of modernity, a discreet blue light illuminated the floor, letting everyone know when the dishwasher was in use. In addition to the high-performance dishwasher, a few extras that stand out are the touch-operated faucet, pot filler, a hot water dispenser, and a galley sink with accessories for serving. Undertaking a remodeling project during the challenges of the pandemic, including supply chain disruptions, posed its fair share of obstacles. A notable incident occurred when a measuring mishap transpired between the cabinets, island, and appliances, resulting in an unexpected extra six inches of space. The team from Red Chair Designs transformed this unexpected opportunity into a practical solution, crafting a narrow cutting board storage area that has since become an indispensable and cherished part of their daily kitchen routine. AJ and Kate’s kitchen transformation with Red Chair Designs was more than just a renovation — it was a journey of dreams coming to life. With their newfound space and top-of-the-line appliances, their kitchen became a stage for culinary delights and unforgettable moments, all wrapped in the warm and inviting embrace of Red Chair Designs. Like a sweet ending to a dish, their dream kitchen truly is a cherry on top.
- Contemporary Chic in Carbondale
By Ben Frieler N estled in the cozy mountain community of Carbondale, this stunning design was inspired by the ski chalets of Aspen. The homeowner partnered with Sabina Berend of Sabina Design, and Caletta Construction to make her dream of a chic, Mountain Contemporary kitchen a reality. High ceilings meet at a vaulted peak and lead the eye to large windows that fill the space with natural light and provide an incredible view of Mt. Sopris. Taking full advantage of this light and height, a crystal chandelier hangs above the dining table and anchors the space. While the vaulted ceiling is undeniably grand, it presented one of the main design challenges that Sabina had to overcome. Her client desired a luxurious and comfortable space for hosting family and friends, but as Sabina explains, “The ceilings are very high, so selecting pieces that would fill the space and make it feel cozier was crucial.” Sabina worked closely with the homeowner, designing mood boards and making multiple trips to Aspen together for inspiration, to ensure that the pieces they selected would bring her vision for the kitchen to life. The expansive, rustic dining table is surrounded by shearling chairs that bring an inviting sense of restfulness to the space. Rich, leather stools line the Calacatta Gold waterfall island and balance the crisp white of the rest of the kitchen with their refreshing, earthy contrast. A large island was one of the homeowner’s “must-have” features. The placement gives guests a second gathering point in the kitchen area that is still oriented around the beautiful view while adding functionality to the kitchen. Beneath these gorgeous furnishings, a full suite of Dacor luxury appliances is the beating heart of this kitchen. The centerpiece is a massive 48-inch professional gas range. This full-featured masterpiece of cooking perfection features six burners and has dual-valve, dual-stacked burners that can go all the way down to 800 BTUs for a true simmer, or up to 18,000 BTUs for a moisture-sealing sear. A generously sized, self-cleaning oven compartment contains a three-part convection system that can comfortably accommodate commercial-size baking sheets, a major perk when entertaining a large number of guests. Panel-ready refrigerator and freezer columns are flush-mounted into the cabinets with push-to-open doors for a true luxury experience. The all stainless interiors feature seamlessly integrated 3D lighting that illuminates the interior from all sides, and precise cooling technology to minimize temperature fluctuations and preserve fresh food for longer. A 24-inch undercounter wine cellar completes the refrigeration options. Designed to control light exposure, humidity, and storage temperature, this unit ensures that wine is always ready for spontaneous get-togethers. The shelf components are constructed from beechwood to naturally absorb humidity and lower the chance of label abrasion typically associated with metal wire racks. The dishwasher embraces the phrase “the more the merrier” and is ready for even the largest gatherings. It has a max capacity of 14 place settings and the largest cleaning zone available in its class. Innovations like Water Wall™ and ZoneBooster™ technologies ensure that when the AutoRelease door opens, every pot, plate, and glass is spotless. At 42 decibels, this panel-ready model is whisper-quiet for discrete cleaning any time of the day. Both the homeowner and design team described working on this project as a dream come true. Sabina explains, “We share the same style and eye for design, so it was a lovely experience.” The homeowner is excited to share the clean lines and elegant features with her friends and family over the holidays and looks forward to spending time relaxing with a morning cup of coffee or glass of wine in the evening as she enjoys the view from her dream kitchen.
- FROM GALLEY TO GATHERING PLACE: Modern Traditional Design in a Unique Denver Home
photos by Dave Daniels Photography Finding the right collaborator is a key step toward achieving success in almost any endeavor. For a major remodel, the right partner becomes even more essential. Luckily for Adrienne and Andrew Lopez, they discovered the perfect collaborator in Kristy Arends of Revelation Studio while planning their home remodel in Denver’s historic Whittier neighborhood. “Revelation Studio was a lifesaver for our kitchen/living room remodel and helped push our vision to the next level,” says Adrienne Lopez while describing the project. “Not only did working with Kristy and her team make our lives easier in navigating all the choices and hurdles that come with a major remodel; they ultimately helped save us money by keeping the project on time and by working seamlessly with all of our contractors.” The home is more than 100 years old, so updating the classic charm for a modern sensibility wouldn’t be the easiest task. The Lopezes were looking to add an expanded pantry, extra storage and a kitchen island, all while maintaining the magic that had drawn them to the home when they purchased it more than a decade ago. “This is a really unique tall skinny brick home,” says Kristy. “We’ve got tall ceilings but not a lot of width. The area is full of historic homes with original, traditional elements. My client’s tastes were more modern/eclectic. So we found a way to marry their tastes in a way that felt like it fit within the home. The trio decided on a modern traditional aesthetic for the renovated kitchen, keeping some of the unique elements that gave the space character while adding in the sleek comforts of a modern design. “The previous owner was a brick mason and built this interesting arched opening but it really didn’t connect with anything else in the space,” says Kristy. “We wanted to make it a feature and center the gas range beneath it. Really make it the focal point and heart of this tricky little galley kitchen.” Preserving the original brickwork was crucial, as was keeping the charming cast-iron wood-burning stove in the attached lounge area. The new design rockets the kitchen into the modern age with stunning white quartz countertops and backsplashes that provide sharp relief against the black-painted bricks and cabinetry. Of course, the most important component of bringing a kitchen into the modern era may be the appliances, and for that, the trio landed on the Signature Kitchen Suite brand. Tucked under the brick arch that imbues the kitchen with the feel of an old-world restaurant, a six-burner gas pro range adds to the sense that a professional chef could be at work here. Two ultra-high burners can crank out up to 23,000 BTUs, while two ultra-low burners can be dialed down to as little as 100 degrees in order to accommodate the most delicate of culinary demands. An LCD screen and smart knobs provide digital displays and can be connected to WiFi, allowing temperatures to be adjusted remotely through the Signature Kitchen Suite app. The stainless-steel French door refrigerator also connects to the app, allowing for remote operations. Inside, 24 cubic feet of storage capacity provides an abundance of space for any leftovers, while dual ice makers offer luxurious spherical ice “cubes” that melt more slowly in beverages than traditional shaped ice. Across from the fridge, in the newly added kitchen island, the drawer-style microwave is nestled discreetly — saving on counter space — as is the PowerSteam dishwasher. It all comes together in a unique kitchen brimming with character and charm. “We knew that the space limitations were going to dictate the layout and that there was really only one way to do it successfully,” says Kristy. “It was a tall order for a small space.” Adrienne says they are thrilled with how it all turned out. “The end result far surpassed all of our expectations and we had plenty of laughs along the way as well,” she says. “Our kitchen remodel was very positive and we are so glad we took the leap of faith to engage in this process.” An impeccable collaboration between owners and designer is at the heart of this success, and Adrienne says she can’t recommend Revelation Studios enough. In fact, Kristy even went the extra mile in creating an original piece of artwork to incorporate into the remodeled living room. “My clients were really clear with what they wanted up front AND they really trusted me to guide them through the process,” says Kristy. “In the end, our clear communication and mutual understating of the aesthetic gave us a finished product they love and LOVE to show off to their friends and family.” Kristy Arends is the CEO and principal designer of Revelation Studio , a Denver-based interior design firm. - Perfect Pizza Dough
Whether you’re a seasoned home chef or a novice in the kitchen, this recipe will help you create a delicious, versatile, perfect dough that can be customized to your taste. With just a few simple ingredients and some patience, you’ll have a base that’s perfect for any pizza topping combination. Check out the video recipe below. YIELD 2 (12-inch) or 4 (8-inch) pizzas INGREDIENTS 2 teaspoons instant yeast 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 cup water 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil DIRECTIONS In a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, add the flour, salt and yeast and mix briefly to combine. Turn the mixer on low speed, add water and olive oil and knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about five minutes. Alternatively, you can knead the dough by hand on a floured surface for about ten minutes. Shape the dough into a smooth ball. Place it on a floured surface and cover it with an inverted bowl, plastic wrap or a damp cloth. Let rise at room temperature for about one and a half hours, or until doubled in bulk. When the dough is ready, punch the dough down before dividing it into portions with a knife. With lightly floured hands, press out any bubbles that might have formed in the dough and form each piece into a small smooth ball. Place about 4 inches apart on a lightly floured surface and cover with plastic wrap or a towel. Let the dough rise a second time for about an hour before rolling it into the desired shape and thickness. Keep this dough in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, or freeze it for up to a month. If you enjoy plenty of toppings, roll the crust out thicker to handle the extra weight and moisture. Prefer a thin crust? Use fewer toppings, but make sure they’re full of flavor. - 15 ESSENTIAL TIPS for Your Kitchen Renovation
Embarking on a kitchen renovation can be both exciting and daunting. It’s a significant investment that can transform the heart of your home. To ensure your project goes smoothly and results in the kitchen of your dreams, here are fifteen key things to remember: 1. SET A REALISTIC BUDGET: Before you start planning, establish a clear budget. Factor in costs for materials, labor, permits, and unexpected expenses. Allocate a contingency fund for any unforeseen issues that may arise during the renovation. 2. PLAN YOUR LAYOUT: Design a functional and efficient kitchen layout. Consider the work triangle — connecting the stove, sink, and refrigerator — as well as ample countertop space and storage. Tailor the layout to suit your cooking style and household needs. 3. CHOOSE QUALITY MATERIALS: Invest in durable materials that can withstand daily kitchen use. Opt for solid cabinets, quality countertops, and reliable appliances. High-quality materials will enhance both longevity and aesthetics. 4. PRIORITIZE STORAGE: Maximize storage space to keep your kitchen organized and clutter-free. Utilize pull-out drawers, rotating shelves, and vertical dividers in cabinets. Explore overhead racks or shelves for additional storage options. 5. COMMUNICATE CLEARLY: Maintain open communication with your contractor throughout the renovation process. Clearly convey your expectations, preferences, and any specific requirements. Address any concerns promptly to avoid misunderstandings. 6. DON’T FORGET VENTILATION: Install a quality ventilation system to remove cooking odors, excess heat, and grease. A range hood that vents outdoors will maintain air quality and prevent moisture buildup in the kitchen. 7. THINK LONG-TERM MAINTENANCE: Choose finishes and materials that are easy to clean and maintain. For instance, quartz or granite countertops are more durable and stain-resistant than marble. 8. CONSIDER ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Opt for energy-efficient appliances to reduce utility costs. Look for appliances with ENERGY STAR ratings, designed to conserve energy without compromising performance. 9. LIGHTING MATTERS: Incorporate proper lighting to enhance functionality and ambiance. Include task lighting above work areas, ambient lighting for general illumination and accent lighting to highlight features like artwork or architectural elements. 10. INCLUDE AMPLE COUNTER SPACE: Aim for generous countertop space for meal preparation and other kitchen tasks. Consider extending countertops with an island or breakfast bar if space allows. 11. ENSURE ADEQUATE ELECTRICAL OUTLETS: Plan for sufficient electrical outlets to accommodate kitchen appliances and gadgets. Install outlets along the backsplash and island to provide convenient access for various uses. 12. ALLOCATE TIME FOR COMPLETION: Renovations can disrupt daily routines. Allow sufficient time for the project, considering potential delays. Coordinate with contractors and suppliers to ensure timelines are realistic and manageable. 13. SELECT PRACTICAL FLOORING: Choose durable flooring materials that can withstand spills and high traffic. Options like tile, hardwood, or vinyl are easy to clean and maintain in a kitchen environment. 14. PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS: Incorporate small details that enhance functionality and aesthetics. This could include soft-close cabinet hinges, integrated storage solutions, or decorative hardware that complements your kitchen style. 15. PLAN FOR PERSONAL TOUCHES: Infuse your complicated personality into the design with personalized touches. Consider incorporating favorite colors, textures, or meaningful decor items to create a kitchen that feels uniquely yours. By keeping these fifteen tips in mind, you’ll be better prepared to tackle your kitchen renovation project. Whether you’re making minor updates or undertaking a complete overhaul, thoughtful planning and attention to detail will help you achieve a kitchen that is not only beautiful but also functional for years to come. Happy renovating!
- Battle of the Blades: Dishwasher vs. Hand-Washing
When it comes to kitchen practices, few debates are as heated as dishwasher vs. hand-washing: POINT: Just Put Your Knives in the Dishwasher There’s a saying in the ski industry; “Tools, not jewels,” meaning if you hit a few rocks in thin snow and gouge your precious ski bases, it was worth it provided you had fun. Skis are a lot like knives, both can handle a large amount of use, neglect and maintenance. I avoid paper-thin blades that chip very easily. If you can damage a knife by cutting a strawberry, it’s not going to hold up to daily use. In the pro kitchen, a knife is a shovel, a screwdriver, a hammer, an extension of creativity and a cook’s best friend. It must hold up to constant sharpening and hundreds of cycles a year in a commercial dishwasher. I concede that dish soap can be harsh and could pit some metal blades, but if this happens, just throw that piece of junk out. Water pressure alone has no effect on the sharpness of a knife. I buy professional knives that are durable and can handle the heat and pressure that a dishwasher provides. Why do I put my knives in the dishwasher? So I know they are sanitized, clean and ready for the next adventure. CHEF MARK KALIX Food Editor Colorado’s Best Kitchens COUNTERPOINT: Always Hand-Wash and Dry I prefer thin knives, lightweight, delicate razor steel, hand-hammered in Seki-City Japan by artisans, hand-crafted to look great and perform with precision. Having a razor-sharp knife awaiting my next cooking journey always brings me great joy. I consider myself to be an accomplished home cook and baker. I see cooking as a hobby, stress relief and a creative outlet. I enjoy taking time to research new recipes and learn new tricks to help my food look and taste better. Having a selection of knives and fun kitchen gadgets adds to the experience of cooking. As Chef Mark points out about harsh soap and high temperatures, I don’t want to risk my knife not being dishwasher safe. He’s coming from a perspective of large quantities of food and where speed and sanitation are important. For me it’s a matter of principle, caring for my knives is just part of the experience. Hand-washing my knife, and making sure it’s back in its nesting spot is the last thing I do when I’m cleaning the kitchen and always signals, job done.
